THE WOMAN IN THE CASTLE

  The sword in her arms,   
 

the ring on her

 finger, the armour

behind her,

 

 

the stone

 lion at

her feet,

all

seem to

 reveal

 

 

the

sign

and

attitude

of

command;

 
                             

even the shadows hold respectfully

back as she looks on, stretched on

the chest of secrets, 

 

 
 

 

standing

statuesque in

 

 front of the

stained window,
   

caressing the tapestry and the chairs dressed

 
   
 
 
   

 

in white as if to

wait for who

knows what

 
   
     

ceremony,

 
              
     

curling up on the small geometric throne

 
     
              
     

 

or tracing a

line, all

white and

black and

smooth skin,
 
   
 

under the

dark curves

of archways

and passages;

 
 
       

and yet she’s

looking for something,

crouched and furious,

 
 

 

on the stairs

that take her

to the roof,

 
 

and on the irregular

 
         
         
         
chessboard of tiles she becomes first a colorful
         
         

pawn and then the priestess of a long-gone cult,

 
         

maybe evoking something that even she doesn’t 

 
         
     
     
           
     

 know and that leaves her naked under her cape, 
 
     
         

surrounded by conflicting signs: boot, umbrella, black heel.
