It is only when

she touches it

and finds

herself caught

that she
realizes
glass is an
invisible
despot,

but it is her very
own clear gaze
that frees her,
and suddenly she
finds herself

not through

the glass like

Alice but on

this side of it,

on the roof

of the Las Letras

wearing

white

and

white of skin and hair, reflected by

a surface that has become her friend,

that doubles and carves and gives way

to white sky, to the roofs of Madrid,

and suddenly

she's flying

 down the

stairs, she

walks

      landings and hallways of
            words, she takes off
        the white, frees
    herself from the day,

caressed

by light and

writings on

the walls

she wears

the night, the

elegance of gold

and black

– then stairs

again, stairs

descending,

and

 finally

the

 hall,

where you
see her, and
catch her eye,
and earn the
mockery of
her gesture.
